Coming Soon to Downtown Louisburg....

When a neighborhood, town, college and arts council come together….
A mural goes up!

Just in time for Independence Day, a depiction of a scene in downtown Louisburg 80 years ago will be erected on the City Barbershop Building at Nash and Main streets.

Julius Shumpert, a Louisburg College student, and Will Hinton, his art professor, created the work.
This week, they told a crowd of townspeople how it came about.

The Louisburg Historic District Neighborhood Association's sub grant from the Franklin County Arts Council was funded by the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.  The Town of Louisburg provided matching funds. Huge thanks to our legislators, these organizations, and all who had a part in making this project possible!

Louisburg Opera House Mural to be Presented

Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as artists Julius Shumpert and Will Hinton share with the community about this exciting downtown Louisburg art project. The LHDNA is pleased to be a part of this project. The board of directors has voted to apply for an additional grant to fund period lighting for the project. Hope to see you there!

The Louisburg Historic District Neighborhood Association (LHDNA) invites you to the Hodges Fine Arts Complex on the Louisburg College campus on Wed. 6/22, at 7 pm. There will be a presentation of The Louisburg Opera House Mural which is being completed during the month of June. Guests will be welcomed by the LHDNA leadership team and presenters will be Louisburg College student Julius Shumpert from Raleigh, NC and LC Art Prof. Will Hinton. They hope to share with you the origin of the project, the process of creating the images, and the story we want to tell folks about our little town on the Tar River.
The mural is a depiction of The Louisburg Opera House with actual Louisburg folks walking down the sidewalk on Nash Street on a Fall morning in 1936, 80 years ago.
The Mural is a combination of a mid 1930s photograph and still shots from a short 1936 Black and White Documentary Film of Louisburg. Depicted in the mural are three actual Louisburg residents: Ms. Elena Phelps Wheeler, Mr. Jesse (Turk) Perry and Mr. Dick Yarborough.
The completed Mural will become a permanent component of the north facing wall of the City Barber Shop Building, located at the corner of Nash and Main, and owned by Mr. Ron Cox. This Public Art project was made possible by a $1500 Grant from the Town of Louisburg and a $1500 Minority Artist Grant from the Franklin County Arts Council to the Louisburg Historic District Neighborhood Association.

Spring Picnic 2016

A wonderful time was had by all! What a great opportunity to visit with friends and meet new neighbors. The weather was perfect. The food was delicious and plentiful.  Special thanks to the Sean and Chris Kingsley for hosting our picnic. Thank you to Terri Elliott and Wanda Harris for organizing us. Jarrett Hathcock and crew (Sean Kingsley, Eric Lautzenheiser, and Elizabeth Hathcock) were up most of the night roasting a pig for us. Their efforts were not in vain. Yummy! Check out photos on the Gallery Page!
